Spider-Man’s Next High-Stakes Adventure

On August 23, 2021, a single spell was cast that changed the course of our reality as we know it… or that was just the case in the trailer Spiderman: No Way Home. The trailer for the highly anticipated third installment of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films garnered a whopping 355.5 million views in its first 24 hours on the internet, gaining a Guiness World Record in the process [1]. It’s safe to say that the hype for our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has never been higher.

From the film debut of the multiverse, or the existence of multiple realities, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the speculation of former Spider-Mans returning to the screen, it’s no wonder the excitement for Spider-Man: No Way Home has swept the world off its feet. For those who watched the hit Disney+ show Loki (spoiler warning for those who have not), the multiverse is officially open in the MCU, meaning literally anything can happen. In the trailer for No Way Home, returning superhero Doctor Strange tells Peter Parker, “the multiverse is a concept about which we know frighteningly little” [2]. In simpler terms, the audience is in for a wild ride.

The presence of the multiverse has many fans wondering whether or not this film could mark the return of previous Spider-Man stars, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. After all, the multiverse could provide them with the opportunity to become a part of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker’s reality. Considering Spider-Man: Far From Home marked the return of J.K. Simmon’s J. Jonah Jameson, while Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2 made an ominous return at the end of the No Way Home trailer, these theories don’t seem so far-fetched. Eagle-eyed fans have additionally spotted allusions to more former Spider-Man villains in the trailer including Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin [3]. The mere chance of seeing these familiar faces once again is bound to have fans all across the world on the edge of their seats.

Despite the intense level of excitement, fans still have to wonder whether the film will live up to the insanely high expectations. While the multiverse and Doctor Octopus have been confirmed to be a part of the film, many fan theories of who could possibly return have yet to be proven true. In addition, The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield has repeatedly denied his involvement in the film, even claiming that an allegedly leaked image of him on set was photoshopped [4]. Given Marvel’s secretive reputation however, there is no way of knowing what is really in store.

Unanswered questions aside, the excitement for this film is unparalleled to any in cinematic history. Whether or not the cameo rumors are true, it is undeniable that the film’s release will be a truly marvelous event. So what is next for Peter Parker? We will find out when Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters on December 17.
