While at first I thought calling a band “Almost Monday” was just a lame way to say “It’s Sunday”, I was quickly drawn into the band’s music, using it to get through another Wednesday of never ending assignments. It was a little hard for me to think, as the singers do, that “the sun keeps on shining”, but their music still made school a bit more bearable.
My initial reaction was that their music sounded like the songs played when the main character of a teenage drama blasts music on a hot summer day. A classic Indie-Pop band, their music is upbeat and fun, reflective of their past as surfing buddies. Their music is a great listen for anyone who is a fan of 2010s pop, the Wallows, The Strokes, Fitz and the Tantrums, or for anyone just looking for some hype, bubbly music to get through a day. The lighthearted lyrics will make you smile, and the guitar riffs will make you bop your head, no matter where you are.
Their first song parking lot view was released in early 2020, with their debut EP, don’t say you’re ordinary, coming soon after [1]. Releasing song after song, the band has gone from playing in the back of surf shops in California to being on the main stage at Governors Ball [1]. Their story isn’t just one about a classic band getting together, but rather, a tale of friends pursuing their true dreams, something that is highlighted in their fun lyrics and memorable stage presence. However, they also remember to stay true to themselves, explaining that music becomes more relatable when singers allow themselves to be vulnerable [2]. The band released their debut studio album, DIVE, on September 25th, 2024, and recently announced that they were going on their first worldwide tour.
Some of their top songs include, sunburn, with over 33 million streams on Spotify, and the sun keeps on shining, with over 23 million streams on spotify. I’ve probably listened to only wanna dance and life goes on, an absurd amount of times, but the breaks in between lyrics, upbeat guitar riffs, and fun drumset solos will have you dancing no matter how stressed you are. However, they also acknowledge harsher societal realities, singing in their song cool enough, “sorry if I don’t fit your description/here we are/playing dumb/I don’t fit your description”, a fun but important reminder to teens across the world.
Honestly, I was a bit skeptical when I heard the name “Almost Monday”. Nevertheless, I’ve found myself adding song after song to my playlists and singing along to their catchy lyrics.
