What if Rapunzel was locked in a tower by a feminist enchantress? What if the devil had a grandmother? What if there was a pack of singing Ragamuffins? Wait a minute, what exactly is a Ragamuffin? The only way you’re going to find out about all these strange fairy tale twists – and what exactly a Ragamuffin is – is by seeing Ridge High School’s fall play, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon!
Just like its catchy name suggests, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon is absolutely spectacular, says the cast. This year’s straight play (a play with no music, only acting) is all about fairy tales – but not your normal “Mirror, Mirror on the wall” monologue and the cheesy repetition of “and they all lived Happily Ever After.” This is a whole new hilarious turn for common childhood fairy tales.
In case you didn’t know, The Brothers Grimm were compilers of 209 fairy tales we know by heart today, including “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Cinderella,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and many more, all of which will be zoomed through in a two hour performance by some of our most talented classmates in a humorous and unique new style.
From beginning to end, the play is filled with tons of characters from all different ranges; the chances that a favorite fairy tale character (and some new ones!) makes an appearance are high. The audience will get to see stories like “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” and “Rapunzel,” but will also find new stories they probably have never heard of, like “The Wolf and The Seven Young Kids” or “Straw, Coal and Bean.” The show and all these characters will be led by two charismatic narrators that will keep the audience laughing throughout the show with their comical dialogue and banter.
“It is extremely fun! I love it, I do. I love getting on stage and just going with the flow and being here with everyone and going off of people. The whole experience is just so much fun!” Caroline Carl ‘16, who plays Narrator 2, the quirkier and slightly insane counterpart of the narrator duo, says about getting to be a part of the play.
“The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon is going to be an amazingly funny play that everyone will enjoy, I guarantee it,” says Sam Cline ‘15, who plays Narrator 1, the more reserved and authoritative partner of the duo.
“It is extremely funny. We all have the highest energy. We all love it so much. The whole thing is so amazing and you can feel the energy on stage and how much we love it. Everyone will enjoy it,” Carl reassures.
Mrs. Kern, who is in charge of the whole play and is very excited about this year’s performance, says, “It’s a hilarious show combining The Grimm’s Brothers 209 fairy tales. It’s very silly. It’s been fantastic.” By now, you must be wondering what could be so funny about this play that the cast and crew are raving about. There’s only one way to find out!
